DETROIT, MI - A historic move has been made by Detroit’s newest professional sports franchise. The PWHL’s expansion team has officially named hockey pioneer Manon Rhéaume as the organization’s first-ever general manager.
Rhéaume has spent her entire life breaking barriers in the sport. In 1984, she became the first girl to compete in the prestigious Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. Years later, during the 1991-92 season, she was signed by the QMJHL’s Trois-Rivières Draveurs, one of Canada’s top major junior hockey leagues.
The Québécoise goaltender changed the game forever in 1992, becoming the first woman to ever play in a North American professional sports league for men at just 20 years old. Rhéaume tried out with the Tampa Bay Lightning and appeared in two exhibition games during the franchise’s inaugural season.
Now, she will lead Detroit into its inaugural PWHL season. With championship experience representing Team Canada, deep roots in Michigan and a lifelong commitment to growing the women’s game. There may not be a more fitting person to build professional women’s hockey in Hockeytown.
