Forest Hills United Claims First Rugby State Title since 2012

ANN ARBOR, MI - After opening the season with a hard-fought 7-7 draw, Forest Hills United and Rockford’s B-Side entered the Division 2 State Championship undefeated and with unfinished business. In a physical, fast-paced contest at Mitchell Field in Ann Arbor, Forest Hills emerged victorious 21-14 to capture its first state championship since 2012.

The match featured relentless defense from both sides, with limited stoppages and several explosive runs breaking through tough defensive lines. Forest Hills controlled key moments through dominant scrum play and precise kicking, while Rockford’s B-Side continuously applied pressure at the breakdown and challenged every possession.

Forest Hills struck first through #3 Mikel Maiz de Xerica, who converted his own try to give United an early lead. In the closing minutes of the first half, #15 Jaden Plaxton finished off an opportunity created by Centre-Back Christian Garces, with Maiz de Xerica adding the conversion to extend the advantage. Early in the second half, #4 Angelo Gagliardo crossed the line for another Forest Hills try, and Maiz de Xerica remained perfect from the tee to complete the scoring.

Rockford answered through standout flanker Thayn Day converting the try and #11 Jack Falicki added on with the kick. In the second half, Srum-Half Aiden Davis found the try zone off the ruck to keep Rockford within striking distance with Falicki again added the extras.

Forest Hills received a strong performance from Mr. Rugby finalist Fly-Half Levi Silvernale, whose precision kicking helped control field position throughout the contest. United’s forwards dominated in the scrum, creating problems Rockford struggled to solve all afternoon. #8 Isaac Stephan consistently generated momentum with powerful carries, while Indiana commit Centre-Back Colton Sawyer delivered several punishing tackles on defense.

Rockford’s effort was highlighted by excellent counter-rucking and a relentless defensive presence that kept Forest Hills under pressure from start to finish. Thayn Day showcased why he is a player to watch in the coming years, while scrumhalf Aiden Davis impressed with both his communication and playmaking. Falicki converted both of his point-after attempts despite coming up empty on two penalty kick opportunities.

The championship appearance was significant for Rockford’s program, as their B-Side squad reached their first ever Division 2 State Championship while the Rams’ top side simultaneously advanced to the Division 1 State Championship, giving the club representation in both title matches.

For Forest Hills United, the victory marks one of the biggest turnarounds in recent Michigan rugby memory. After winning just one match a season ago, United completed an undefeated campaign and brought home the program’s first state title in 14 years with a 21-14 victory over Rockford.
