The Mendon Hornets continued their hot start to the season Tuesday night, improving to

5 –0 for the first time since 2012, in a hard-fought 58–41 victory over Athens. While senior standout Ryder Gorham, who has been averaging 30 points per game, was held to just 12 points, the Hornets proved that they are far more than a one-man team. From the opening tip, it was clear that Athens had a game plan centered on stopping Ryder. The full-court pressure forced him out of his usual rhythm, but Mendon’s supporting cast rose to the occasion. Ryder’s twin brother, Owen Gorham, stepped up with 17 points, while fellow senior Carter Huston added 9 points, including three crucial three-pointers that helped keep the Hornets in control

"Everybody played their roles tonight,” said Mendon head coach Matt Gorham. “I’m very proud of my team. We played the way we needed to in the situation we were in. Ryder being full-court pressed all night isn’t something you want, but we are not a one-man show. We have playmakers on the team other than Ryder, and those guys stepped up tonight. We are a good basketball team, and I don’t think the score from tonight is a reflection of how good we really are. We are going to take our one day of practice tomorrow and go after St. Phil with all we’ve got Thursday night”

The Hornets established a dominant lead early, jumping out to a 28–9 advantage by halftime. However, Athens fought back in the second half, trimming a portion of the deficit before Mendon pulled away to secure the 58–41 final score. Despite giving up some of the lead late, the Hornets’ performance showcased balance, resilience, and depth.

Looking ahead, Mendon prepares for a challenging matchup against BC St. Phil on Thursday. A win there would position the Hornets strongly for a potential league title, and with multiple playmakers stepping up in Ryder’s absence, the team appears ready for the challenge. Tuesday night’s victory was more than just another win in the record books. It was a statement: Mendon is a complete team, capable of winning even when their star player is heavily defended. With seniors Ryder, Owen, and Carter leading the charge and a supporting cast ready to rise when needed, the Hornets are sending a message to the rest of the league: they’re not a one-man show they’re a team to be reckoned with.
