The Breslin Center was absolutely packed to the brim for the Division 1 State Championship. It was standing-room only, and the atmosphere was electric long before the opening tip. Both student sections were already on their feet, going crazy as the two best teams in the state prepared to battle for a title. Rockford wasted no time getting things started. Jash Bascom opened the scoring with an and-one finish, giving the Rams an early 3–0 lead with 7:21 left in the first quarter. Rockford kept that early energy going as Jace Opoku-Agyemang knocked down a quick jumper to extend the lead to 5–0 with 6:14 remaining.

Moments later, after forcing a turnover, Eli Wolfe buried a deep three from beyond the arc. Just like that, Rockford had jumped out to an 8–0 lead, forcing East Lansing to call a timeout with 5:24 left in the quarter. The Trojans finally got on the board when Kelvin Tolbert Jr. scored with 4:32 left, cutting the deficit to 8–2. East Lansing slowly began settling into the game. With 3:32 remaining, Kingston Thomas drew a shooting foul and calmly knocked down both free throws to make it 8–4.

Rockford pushed the lead to 10–6, but a missed free throw from Opoku-Agyemang left the door open. Thomas responded with a flashy contested layup down low, bringing East Lansing within 10–8 with 1:40 left in the first.

After a late free throw, Rockford held an 11–8 lead with 30 seconds remaining. East Lansing took the final possession. Tolbert calmly brought the ball up the floor and let the clock wind down before initiating the offense with ten seconds left. The ball found Thomas, who made it look effortless, drilling a buzzer-beating jumper to close the quarter.

Rockford led 11–10 after one. The Rams opened the second quarter strong as Bascom finished a layup to make it 13–10. Shortly after, Dylan Gross knocked down a huge three following a turnover, pushing the Rockford lead to 16–12 with 6:38 remaining.

Then the game shifted. Tolbert, guarded by Bascom in the corner, rose up and drilled a three right in his face. Moments later, after another Trojan defensive stop, Mr. Basketball Kelvin Tolbert Jr. buried another contested three. Just like that, the game was tied 18–18 with 5:19 left in the half. East Lansing kept the pressure on defensively. Another forced turnover led to a layup by Thomas, giving the Trojans their first lead of the night, 20–18.

But Rockford answered right back. Opoku-Agyemang stepped up and knocked down a clutch three to reclaim the lead 21–20 with 4:14 left in the second. For the next few minutes, both teams traded baskets in a back-and-forth battle. East Lansing eventually built a 27–25 lead with 2:46 remaining before Tolbert delivered one of the biggest plays of the half.

The Michigan Mr. Basketball winner knocked down a huge three while drawing the foul, completing a four-point play that sent the Breslin crowd into a frenzy and pushed the Trojans ahead 35–25 with 1:10 left. Rockford responded late, cutting the deficit before halftime, but East Lansing still held a 35–30 lead at the break.

The third quarter began with Tolbert continuing his dominant performance. He scored the Trojans’ first bucket of the half to make it 37–30, already reaching 20 points on the night.

Rockford stayed within striking distance, as Jake Bascom answered with a jumper to make it 37–32. The Rams kept pushing. With 4:45 left in the third, Rockford had trimmed the deficit to just one point at 37–36. But East Lansing responded immediately as Tyree Anthony knocked down a deep three to extend the Trojan lead to 40–36.

Rockford continued battling back. By the 2:27 mark of the third quarter, the Rams had tied the game 40–40. Tolbert then stepped to the line after being fouled on a three-point attempt and calmly knocked down all three free throws, giving East Lansing a 43–40 lead with 2:06 remaining. Late in the quarter, Bascom hit another jumper to bring Rockford back within one at 43–42. Rockford attempted to hold for the final shot, but the Trojans forced a turnover in the closing seconds, allowing the clock to expire with East Lansing holding a 45–42 lead heading into the fourth.

The final quarter began with immediate fireworks. Bascom opened the scoring with a deep three, tying the game 45–45 and sending the crowd into another roar. This championship game quickly turned into a battle of resilience. Neither team backed down, and it truly felt like the two best teams in the Division 1 bracket were exactly where they belonged.

With 6:18 left, Rockford regained the lead 48–47, once again thanks to Bascom, forcing East Lansing to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, Rockford’s defense stepped up again. A forced turnover led to a layup from Opoku-Agyemang, extending the Rams' lead to 50–47 with 4:03 remaining. Rockford continued controlling the tempo. With 2:44 left, the Rams held possession and began slowing the game down, forcing East Lansing to foul in order to stop the clock. The tension inside the Breslin Center was unbelievable.

Then came the moment the Trojans needed. With 1:36 remaining, Tolbert drilled a deep corner three, tying the game 50–50 and sending the East Lansing crowd into chaos.

But Rockford refused to fold. Just seconds later, Eli Wolfe attacked the rim and finished a layup to give the Rams the lead back 52–50 with 52 seconds remaining.

East Lansing brought the ball up looking for the final shot. Rockford’s defense applied relentless pressure, forcing the Trojans to burn another timeout with 12 seconds left.

Out of the timeout, East Lansing inbounded the ball to Anthony. He launched a three for the lead — but it missed. Opoku-Agyemang grabbed the rebound with seven seconds left, and Rockford immediately called timeout. With the game hanging in the balance, Rockford inbounded the ball. Opoku-Agyemang was fouled and calmly finished the final points that sealed the victory. 54–50. The buzzer sounded, and the celebration began. The Rockford Rams are Division 1 State Champions.
