The Rockford Rams are headed to the state championship. In a defensive battle during the MHSAA Division 1 Boys Basketball State Semifinals, Rockford held off a determined push from the Auburn Hills Avondale Yellow Jackets to secure a 38–35 victory and punch their ticket to the state finals. From the opening tip, both teams made it clear that points would be hard to come by. Every possession was contested, with physical defense and disciplined half-court sets dominating the pace of the game. Rockford managed to create small scoring runs early in the first half, leaning on patience offensively while their defense forced Avondale into difficult looks.

A key piece of Rockford’s offensive attack throughout the night was Dylan Gross, whose deep shooting range forced Avondale’s defense to extend far beyond the arc. Gross has the ability to pull up from well outside the three-point line, and that threat alone created spacing for the Rams’ offense. Even when he wasn’t scoring, his range demanded attention and opened driving lanes and passing opportunities for his teammates. Despite trailing for much of the night, Avondale never backed down. The Yellow Jackets entered the semifinal as a team that many had counted out when looking at the remaining Division 1 field. But throughout the game they proved they belonged on the same stage. Their defense stayed aggressive, they forced key turnovers, and they consistently found ways to keep the game within striking distance.

As the second half progressed, the intensity continued to rise. Avondale chipped away at the deficit and began to apply pressure late in the fourth quarter, turning the final minutes into a tense back-and-forth battle where every possession felt critical.

With Rockford clinging to a narrow lead late in the fourth, the Rams delivered one of the biggest moments of the night. After a key stop on defense, Jake Bascom brought the Rockford crowd to its feet with a powerful breakaway dunk, throwing it down with authority to give the Rams a surge of momentum in the closing moments.

Even after the dunk, Avondale refused to fold. The Yellow Jackets continued to battle until the final seconds, keeping the outcome in doubt until the closing possession. But Rockford’s defense held firm once again, coming up with the stops they needed to secure the hard-fought 38–35 victory. While the loss ends Avondale’s season, the Yellow Jackets walked away having proven they could compete with anyone in Division 1. In a game defined by defense, toughness, and execution, they pushed one of the state’s top teams to the brink and showed why they earned their place in the semifinals. With the win, Rockford advances to the MHSAA Division 1 Boys Basketball State Championship, where the Rams will face the East Lansing Trojans with a state title on the line. The Rams now stand just one win away from completing their championship run.
